Using CalFresh Benefits to Purchase HOT Foods

Due to the severity of Northern California wildfires, CalFresh Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) beneficiaries may use their CalFresh SNAP EBT benefits to purchase HOT foods and foods intended to be consumed on retailer premises from authorized SNAP retailers between now and November 15, 2017. These purchases are NOT subject to sales tax.  This includes SNAP retailers in Lake, Mendocino, Sonoma, Napa, Butte, Contra Costa, Marin, Nevada, Orange, Sacramento, Solano, Sutter and Yuba counties. CalFresh SNAP authorized retailers in these counties are encouraged to post a special notice in the store letting customers know they can use their CalFresh SNAP EBT benefits to purchase hot foods.

Safely Surrendered Baby Law

The Safely Surrendered Baby Law provides a safe alternative to abandonment of a new born baby. The intent of the law is to provide freedom from prosecution and maintenance of confidentiality for the individual safely surrendering a baby within 72 hours of birth at a designated safe surrender site.

A New statewide toll-free hotline (1-877-BABYSAF) or (1-877-222-9723), provide safe surrender site locations throughout the state.  In addition to the hotline the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) also offers safely surrendered baby publications that provide information about the law.  These materials, as well as additional information about the law, may be accesses at their website at www.cdss.ca.gov/inforesources/safely-surrender-baby.
